At Sofia’s Vasil Levski Airport, A&M Architects has completed the architectural design and project management for the interim phase of a broader redevelopment strategy that will reshape Terminal 2 in two distinct stages.
This first, 4-year phase introduces a fully reconfigured suite of F&B outlets in 1,700 square metres of renovated commercial space conceived to operate as a high-performance transition environment until the airport’s expansion enables the rollout of the permanent phase, also assigned to A&M.
Commissioned by international F&B operator SSP Bulgaria, the project called for an entirely reconfigured retail landscape capable of supporting multiple global and local brands while responding to the strict operational, security, and technical demands of an international airport. A&M developed the whole design concept, technical documentation, and implementation strategy, overseeing all phases of delivery.
The redesigned zone introduces five distinct outlets, Starbucks, Camden & Co, Bar 09–27, Negroni and Uppercrust, unified by a spatial framework that prioritises visibility, intuitive circulation and streamlined service flows. Each venue retains its own architectural character, shaped through calibrated material palettes, lighting schemes and front of house detailing that reinforce each brand’s identity without compromising the coherence of the wider terminal environment.
Beyond aesthetics, the project required precise functional planning. A&M reorganised back of house areas, optimised service routes, and integrated complex systems within a heavily regulated setting. Open service counters, high durability materials and adaptable layouts were deployed to ensure both operational robustness and ease of maintenance in a high traffic context.
Delivered in July 2025, the project demanded continuous coordination with airport authorities, contractors, and international stakeholders. A&M’s dual role as lead designer and project manager ensured alignment between concept and execution, preserving architectural intent throughout construction.
The result is a cohesive F&B ecosystem that elevates the terminal’s commercial offering while meeting the expectations of contemporary travel: fast, precise, comfortable and experience driven. The new outlets introduce a renewed sense of rhythm and orientation within the terminal, transforming a once fragmented zone into a structured and engaging passenger destination.
This project adds to A&M’s expanding portfolio of transport hub environments, reinforcing the practice’s expertise in designing high-performance, brand integrated commercial spaces within complex operational settings.
